Fireworks

by Chuck Charlton <charlton@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 5, 2008 at 10:47 AM

The fireworks were excellent last night. We normally stay in San
Francisco, but a friend-of-a-friend invited us to Sausalito for the
day, and it was a lot of fun.

The parade in the morning was short and sweet. Politicians, a marching
band, classic American cars and trucks, and a flatbed trailer with a
rock band playing "Mother's Little Helper" were all part of the
patriotic theme. I think. I may have been confused after those bloody
marys.

That evening we went to the town square for a couple of hours of jazz
and blues, then we went to the Sausalito Yacht Club for dinner and
fireworks. The firing barge was perhaps a hundred yards from the yacht
club, so we got a great view.

When the Sausalito fireworks ended, the San Francisco shows started.
They were synchronized, with identical pyrotechnics launched
simultaneously from barges off Aquatic Park and off Pier 39. It was
fun to watch, but there was a tongue of fog coming in the Golden Gate
which obscured most of the fireworks. We could see the first 50 feet
of the launches, then 90% of of the displays were obscured, and we only
saw the illumination from the inside of the cloud layer. But a few of
the highest blasts came out the top of the fog/cloud bank, and that was
impressive.

The explosions obscured by clouds reminded me of some artillery
exercises that we ran on the Hornet back in 1966. Except not as loud.
